How to Make a Matcha Affogato at Home, Effortlessly

Sometimes you do deserve a bit of a treat. When we usually talk about our matcha, we know that soft zip of energy it brings, the steady calmness of its vibrant green, the delicious umami flavour when stirred into milk.

But matcha contains multitudes – and there’s a version of an afternoon tea that doesn’t involve a teapot at all. Whisk a shot of vibrant Nuditea Matcha, pour it warm over cold vanilla ice cream, and watch the two meet in the cup. That’s it. That’s the whole ritual.

What is an Affogato?

Affogato was born from a simple pairing: hot espresso poured over cold ice cream, the bitterness cutting straight through the sweetness. Swap the espresso for matcha and you get something gentler but just as satisfying. Our matcha brings a smooth, creamy umami depth that plays beautifully against cold vanilla, so each spoonful moves between grassy, sweet, and rich without ever settling in one place.

It’s a five-minute treat, but it still feels like a proper moment. Perfect for finishing a dinner party, or for turning a Tuesday afternoon into something worth pausing for.

Which Nuditea Matcha to Reach For

Our Barista Grade Matcha is the one for busy kitchens and cafés. It’s built to be batch-made, whisk up a matcha concentrate ahead of time and pour to order, so it’s smooth, consistent, and ready whenever the ice cream is. It’s the practical everyday choice for affogato at scale.

If you’re making this at home for yourself, our Ceremonial Grade Matcha is the one to reach for. Shade grown and stone milled, it has a deeper umami sweetness and a delicate finish, the kind of matcha that turns a quick dessert into a proper moment. Whisk it fresh, hot, and let it be the star of the glass.

How to Make a Matcha Affogato at Home

You’ll need:

  • A scoop (or two) of good Vanilla Ice Cream – we love to get ours from Brickells!
  • 3.0g Nuditea Matcha Powder
  • 30ml water at 75°C

Method:

  1. Add the matcha to a small bowl or jug with the water at 75°C. We like to use our batch matcha recipe.
  2. Whisk briskly in a zig-zag motion until it turns smooth, glossy, and free of clumps. A bamboo whisk gives the best froth, but a regular whisk or milk frother works well too.
  3. Scoop your ice cream into a glass so you can watch the layers meet.
  4. Pour the matcha over the top and serve straight away.

Make It Your Own

Swap in roasted strawberry ice cream for a swirl of flavours. Add a scattering of toasted sesame seeds or a few crushed pistachios on top for crunch. For an evening version, a splash of oat milk poured alongside turns it into something closer to an affogato float.

However you take it, it comes together in minutes and tastes like it took a lot longer.
